Here is how the H-ITT system works:

Students or audience members use remote control “clickers” to respond to questions posed by the teacher or speaker. Questions can be asked in many different formats: Verbal, displayed on an overhead projector, or even paper based such as a test or exam. Student responses can be saved for later evaluation and grading, or the system can simply be utilized to guide the lecturer by providing instant, feedback from the audience. This instantaneous assessment of student comprehension enables the instructor to confidently move forward with the material or step back and review, closely tailoring the lecture to the students' needs. Automatic grading enables the instructor to assess the students as often as desired without the burden of manually grading papers.

With the remote control, each student responds to the instructor's multiple-choice questions by aiming it at wall-mounted receivers, as shown in the illustration below. The receivers collect the signals and send them to a Windows, Macintosh, or Linux PC through the USB port that is running the H-ITT acquisition program. The students two-way remote indicates with a green light if their transmission was successfully recorded. The H-ITT acquisition program collects the responses from the students and saves them to a file and displays a histogram of the results to the instructor.

There are 2 main components to the H-ITT system: Hardware, and Software.

HARDWARE

The hardware needed to implement a H-ITT classroom response system consists of remote control units called clickers, and base receiver units that collect the remote control signals and provide this data to a computer. H-ITT provides both IR (infrared) and RF (radio frequency) clickers and base receiver units. Choosing the right hardware depends on your needs. In general the IR hardware provides for higher security, and costs less, but it is not as easy to use as an RF system. The RF system provides simplicity (truly plug and play) and students do not need to point their clickers to have their response recorded. For a detailed comparison of IR and RF, click here (IR vs. RF).

H-ITT remote control clickers have 10 buttons for answering questions, and 3 keys for various other functions such as allowing students to enter their confidence level (regarding an answer) or scrolling through written test questions. An indicator light lets the student know their response has been recorded, and provides various other clicker status indications.

H-ITT’s base receivers can be connected to a computer with either a USB cable, or a serial data connection. IR base receivers can be easily daisy-chained so multiple receivers can be located in a large room to give the line-of site requirement. RF base receivers can cover a larger area and typically only 1 RF base is needed for class sizes up to 200 students. However, multiple RF base receivers can be connected to the same computer (using the H-ITT CRS software) so even the largest auditorium can be converted into an interactive classroom setting.

SOFTWARE

H-ITT offers two software packages to implement your classroom response system:

H-ITT CRS is a powerful, flexible software set that allows the instructor to teach their class their way. You can report and grade any on-the fly verbal question or display questions with an overhead visual, or even give paper based tests. All students responses can be recorded, and are automatically graded based on your preferences and weighting. Reports are in CVS (excel) format so exporting to WebCT (Blackboard), or pasting in your gradebook is only a mouse click away.

H-ITTShow is a PowerPoint plug-in, that you can Create, present, assess, grade and report all in PowerPoint. Surveys, team and group activities as well as individual assessments are provided. A wealth of pre-designed PowerPoint slides and clips make it simple to insert an interactive page in your presentation. Multiple digit responses, and multi-level demographic results are easily cut and pasted into your presentation. H-ITTShow is the premiere PowerPoint based response and analysis software system available today.
